First-gen leaders don’t just break barriers in education – many become powerful catalysts for community transformation. Every community has its own changemakers – those who see a challenge and are driven to address it. However, these leaders aren’t always in the spotlight, but their impact is felt in classrooms, neighborhoods, and beyond. Many of these young leaders are first-generation college students who aspire to better communities for themselves, their families, and friends. The Aspire Leaders Program is one pathway for emerging leaders to turn their unique perspectives and experiences into actionable change. No matter your background, you can have a impact in your community and gain additional networks and resources.

Empowering First-Gen Leaders: From Vision to Impact

According to Ashoka, a true changemaker feels empowered to challenge the status quo and address pressing social, economic, and educational issues. First-generation university students bring unique advantages to this role. Their lived experiences navigating obstacles have cultivated resilience, innovation, and often a desire to support the communities they know best.

Many of the learners who go through the Aspire Leaders Program leverage these strengths to create meaningful change. The program amplifies these natural leadership abilities with additional tools, networks, and resources needed to amplify their impact. Through our global community of changemakers, participants gain access to mentorship, personal and professional development, collaboration opportunities, and potential funding to turn their visions into reality.

Success Stories: First-Gen Leaders Creating Change

Akbar Kurniawan, ALP ‘22, exemplifies how first-generation leaders can transform challenges into opportunities for community-wide impact. Recognizing the limited resources available for the deaf community in Indonesia, Kurniawan utilized his Aspire Institute Community Action Award to forge partnerships with local non-profits and government agencies to expand sign-language training.

Diana Citlali Avila Padilla, ALP ’22, recognized the unique challenges facing young female scientists in Mexico, particularly first-generation and socioeconomically disadvantaged students. After receiving a Community Action Award, she expanded her organization’s programming. She built a supportive community that empowers girls in STEAM to continue to pursue their educational and professional dreams with a community of care and like-minded peers behind them.

Practical Steps for Making an Impact in Your Community

You don’t need to launch a large-scale initiative or receive funds to start creating change. Even small efforts cause strides forward. Here’s how you can begin making a difference:

  1. Volunteer in Your Community

Find organizations addressing issues you’re passionate about. Even a few hours a week volunteering at local schools, shelters, or hospitals can make the world of difference, provide valuable leadership experience, and fit into your busy schedule as a first-gen college student.

  1. Support Fellow Changemakers and Local Networks

Strengthen the potential of those around you. Support local aspiring entrepreneurs, mentor other first-gen students, or get involved in grassroots organizations. Your engagement helps create a network of changemakers working toward shared goals and achieving more than they previously thought possible.

  1. Share Resources

Share valuable opportunities – whether it’s a program you’ve completed, a scholarship you discovered, or resources you think will be helpful. You never know what one small piece of advice or a suggestion to apply to a scholarship may do for someone’s next steps or confidence. Our alumni and Aspire Leaders Program learners often share their experiences. We have seen the power of resource sharing and word of mouth in raising awareness about opportunities that could change the trajectory of someone’s leadership journey.
