Heifetz hopes to instill a passion and eye for using leadership to meet the complex challenges of today; equipping students with the foundational principles to navigate their own realities. Such topics include identifying the key perspectives of stakeholders, building and renewing trusting relationships, and approaching conflict.
Professor Heifetz is trained as a psychiatrist with a degree from Harvard Medical School. He served as the founding director of Harvard’s Center for Public Leadership and his classes at the Kennedy School, including Exercising Leadership: The Politics of Change, remain very popular. In 2007, Heifetz was named the King Hussein bin Talal Senior Lecturer in Public Leadership, largely for his pioneering role in establishing leadership as an area of study and education in the United States and at Harvard. His research addresses two main challenges: developing a conceptual foundation for the analysis and practice of leadership; and developing transformative methods for leadership education, training, and consultation.
